Restoring function with hands-on therapy

Avicenna was a physician from the Middle Ages who is regarded as one of the earliest and greatest health and wellbeing philosophers. His work has been studied and practiced for hundreds of years in the Middle East and throughout Europe.

When Ali Abdo opened his osteopathy clinic he decided to name it ‘Avesenna’ because his holistic health philosophy aligned with Avicenna’s ideas advocating the importance of hands-on therapy, exercise and diet for maintaining good health.

“I never wanted to be just ‘Newport Osteopathy’,” explains Ali. “Avicenna inspired the name Avesenna - ‘Ave’ in Latin means to ‘greet’ or ‘welcome’, and ‘Senna’ is a medicinal plant that aids in stomach and intestinal health.”

Osteopathy is a recognised form of complementary medicine, providing a ‘hands-on’ approach to restoring optimal function of the musculoskeletal system.

Ali has always had a passion for hands-on therapy and trained to be an osteopath though studying human movement and exercise rehabilitation as well as working part-time as a sports trainer and massage therapist.

He has been an osteopath for eleven years, working full-time in his Newport practice on Melbourne Road since 2015.

“I opened my clinic in Newport because I’m from the area. I value family so I didn’t want to spend too much time commuting to and from work,” he explains. “I also appreciate the sense of community in Newport and I feel privileged to serve my local community.”

Perhaps a little-known fact about Ali is that he is a three-time former Olympic wrestler. His sporting background means that he is very goal- and results-driven and it’s what he believes makes him unique in his field.

What draws Ali most to osteopathy is the opportunity to help others with their physical health, which also results in better mental health.

“My work is so rewarding that it almost doesn’t feel like work,” he smiles. “Following my passion, while being able to improve a person's quality of life, is the most satisfying experience I could ask for.”
