A Long-Standing Family Hairdressing Salon

Hairdresser Patcharin Kengkhetjit had been working occasionally at Tiamo Hair Design when the previous owner asked her whether she wanted to take over in 2018.

“I said yes because I liked the area, the clients and my work colleagues,” smiles Patcharin. “It was really important to me that I felt comfortable with the place and the environment.”

In 2009, Patcharin arrived in Melbourne from Thailand to pursue a relationship and for the opportunity for a change in career. In Thailand, she had been an accountant but didn’t particularly enjoy it, so she thought in Melbourne that she’d take a hairdressing course and use it as an opportunity to improve her English skills.

“I like hairdressing because you get to know a lot of people and it’s an opportunity to talk and connect with others,” explains Patcharin. “My work is always challenging, every situation is different and the day goes fast.”

What makes Tiamo Hair Design unique? “This hair salon has been here for a long time, so we’re part of the local streetscape on Mason Street. When I mention Tiamo they say ‘oh yes, I know where that is.’

With new families moving into the area all the time, Patcharin is hoping that Tiamo will become their ‘family salon’.

“We offer men’s, women’s and children’s haircuts at an affordable price while maintaining a high quality of service. Often a husband or wife starts coming here and then they encourage everyone in their family to come.

“I have a client that lives around the corner and her husband, herself, daughter, mum, dad and husband’s sister all come to get their hair cut here!

“And we are really thankful to the local community for their continued support, especially during the tough times with COVID-19.”
