Community
Michael Stewart started the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club in 2004 because he was a member of a folk band and he and his band needed somewhere to play.
As well as bringing people together to make and enjoy music, the Club offers another benefit - it provides opportunities for people to connect with other locals.
The Club has now fostered a range of monthly and annual events, as well as workshops to develop young and older musicians by connecting them with professional musicians for leadership and inspiration.
The much anticipated annual Newport Folk Festival is a major event for the Club.

At The Music Playground, play-based group classes for children aged 0-5 offer a unique blend of the Suzuki, Kodály and Orff approach, widely renowned as the best ways to teach music to young children. Babies under six months can attend for free.
Instrument lessons start from three years old. There is a strong emphasis on creativity, excellence in technique, and a playful approach, because children and adults learn best when they're having fun.
Learning music at The Playground is much more than learning an instrument. It’s about developing the whole person by making music with friends. Singing and moving to the beat helps children internalise music, making learning an instrument easier, so children attend private lessons as well as the weekly group class. Adult lessons are also available.

Community
The Substation is the nation’s leader in multi-arts and experimental practice. We connect our continent’s most diverse local communities in Naarm/Melbourne’s west to the world through a program of international, national and local presentation, development and engagement opportunities.
Constructed over a century ago (1915) to power Melbourne’s suburban rail system, The Substation building is a landmark in the industrial history of the inner west of the city. Through the determination and hard work of a group of local residents, The Substation building was successfully restored as Hobsons Bay Community Arts Centre (2008), before formally adopting the name The Substation and being reimagined as one of the country’s most significant homes for contemporary and experimental arts – a cultural precinct with national and international critical acclaim.
The spirit that propelled those local heroes through its transformation remains imbued in the site today. Amplifying artworks that transcend form, The Substation’s multi-artform spaces are illuminated with the most urgent contemporary arts to inspire us to refigure problematic histories, imagine possible futures, and forge new connections.
